The phrase “put numbers in video games” rarely describes an athlete’s results like Erling Haaland’s early days in the English Premier League.

Since joining Borussia Dortmund in the summer, 22-year-old Manchester City striker Haaland has scored 20 goals in 10 league games and four other competitions. With 15 league goals, Haaland is almost halfway to the English Premier League’s single-season record of 31 goals after just ten games.

Haaland had already broken records early in the season. According to the source, he became the fastest player to score 15 goals in the English Premier League.

Haaland became the first player in the English Premier League to score three consecutive home games.

So what made his appearance in the English game so striking?

“It’s a combination of attributes – abilities that both complement each other but somehow contradict each other: such a tall player should not be so fast; such a powerful player should not be so flexible; such a strong player should not have such finesse – this makes Haaland not only so effective but also literally exceptional,” the article says.

U.S. soccer coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, who met Haaland a few times during his time in Germany, told The New York Times that “you can’t stop him.” However, Matarazzo’s Stuttgart team came closer to containing him than many.

While Haaland’s enemies scramble for ways to counter him, his dominance is causing problems for another demographic: video game developers.

Soccer Manager 2023 is released next month, and Sports Interactive studio director Miles Jacobson told Goal that Haaland’s reality-bending performances this season are challenging virtual reality so far.

“Haaland is like a machine,” Jacobson told Goal. “We had problems with Haaland in the development phase because sometimes (the quality assurance team) means he didn’t get enough goals.”
