Red Sox reportedly interested in former All-Star outfielder and Gold Glove winner

January 18, 2023

According to reports, the Boston Red Sox is considering signing a new outfielder.

Boston has been linked to practically everyone available this offseason, and a source now claims that the team is mulling a deal for former Atlanta Braves outfielder Adam Duvall.

Duvall is a fascinating candidate to be added to Boston’s outfield. With 38 home runs, a National League-high 113 RBIs, and a Gold Glove in 2021, the 34-year-old shone offensively and defensively but wasn’t as effective in 2022.

Due to injuries, the former All-Star played in 86 games, hitting 12 home runs and slashing.213/.276/.401. Even though he was sidelined for most of last season, adding Duvall might still give Boston the flexibility it needs after losing Trevor Story to injury.

As the team’s projected starting center fielder for the 2023 season, Duval would provide the organization the flexibility to move Enrique Hernandez to any middle infield position while they wait for Story to return.

The former Cincinnati Red has spent the majority of his career playing left and right field, but he started playing center field in the big leagues in 2020 and has played it sometimes ever since. Duvall had some exciting figures last season despite missing some time. Along with being in 78th percentile for arm strength and 67th percentile for spring speed in 2022, Duvall was in the 88th % for outs above average.

If Duvall is healthy in 2023, he will provide Boston with the needed power boost. In his career, Duvall has reached the threshold of 31 or more home runs three times and the 100-RBI mark twice. In 2022, the Red Sox had the 20th-most home runs and had yet to improve significantly in terms of power.

Boston would have more trade flexibility if it acquired Duvall, should the team decide to pursue that course of action. Jarren Duran, a young outfielder, would probably not see regular playing time if Duvall started as the team’s center fielder and Hernandez played in the infield. Recently, Boston has been linked to the Miami Marlins in trade discussions for a pitcher, so adding Duran to the mix could facilitate a deal.

Although no deal has been reached, speculations are circulating in Boston.
