Jayson Tatum hit four 3-pointers in the final 4:14 of the fourth quarter as the Boston Celtics beat the host Philadelphia 76ers 95-86 on Thursday to tie the Eastern Conference semifinals with three wins series.
Game 7 is Sunday in Boston. Tatum started 1-for-14 from the field but finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, & six assists on 5-of-21 shooting.
Marcus Smart led the Celtics with 22 points, and Jaylen Brown had 17. Malcolm Brogdon added 16 points, Robert Williams had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Al Horford grabbed 11.
Joel Embiid had 26 points, ten rebounds, and three blocks, and Tyrese Maxey added 26 for the 76ers, who haven’t advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals since 2001.
James Harden had 13 points and nine assists. The Sixers went 8-for-34 (23.5 percent) from 3-point range, and Harden went 0-for-6. Philadelphia is looking for its first playoff series win over the Celtics since 1982 after losing to Boston five times in the playoffs.
Tatum hit back-to-back controversial 3-pointers, and the Celtics took an 87-83 lead with 3:35 left in the fourth quarter.
Maxey made a shaky shot on a 3-point attempt but then made two free throws to cut the deficit to 87-84. The 76ers led by five late in the third quarter and by two midway through the fourth.
In the second quarter, the Celtics controlled the rhythm & led by as many as 16 points. With Tatum making 0 of 10 shots, they entered the half with a 50-43 lead.
Smart led the Celtics with 15 first-half points. Maxey put the Sixers close by 15 points before the break. The Sixers closed the game 62-60 when Georges Niang hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 5:30 left in the third quarter.
After the Celtics returned empty-handed, Embiid fouled and made two free throws. Then Harden made two free throws, and the 76ers took the lead 64-62.
Derrick White responded with a 3-pointer, his third of the game, and the Celtics regained a one-point advantage.
