The Line: Orlando Magic +4.5 / Detroit Pistons -4.5
Not every first-game matchup has the potential to be successful. Orlando is
hopeful that selecting forward Paulo Banchero as the first overall choice this year
would result in on-court victories. He may be excellent, but he is not a game-
changing player on the level of LeBron James, so he will need assistance,
particularly from guard Jalen Suggs, who was selected first last year. The
prognosis is a little brighter than it has been in recent years, but that is a low bar
because this is a young team.
Even though Detroit is a young team, I admire how they collaborate. Since they
were selected first overall in the previous draft, wing Cade Cunningham has
primarily lived up to expectations. Jaden Ivey, an electric guard, is added to the
mix this year to provide another component. Additionally, the inclusion of Bojan
Bogdanovic's shooting will make it simpler for all of their young players.
Although I do not expect them to make the playoffs this year, they may get closer
than they have in a while.
In the first game, Detroit is the home favorite. They were favored just seven times
entire season last year, so it is a little bit noteworthy. They won and covered two
occasions when playing the Magic at home. Two of their three victories this
season came while being favorites.
The difference between these teams appears wider now than a year ago,
especially with Orlando hoping a rookie will turn around their season. We will
have to settle for Detroit being favored more often than last season. Time will tell
how this team performs in situations where they are predicted to win.
